After being approved in the Knesset by a majority of 11 members, Amendment No. 38 to the Pharmacists Ordinance — known as the “Pharmacy Technician Law” — entered into force at the end of January this year.

According to the provisions of the law, a pharmacy technician may be certified through a relatively short course, without a matriculation certificate, and be granted pharmacist-level authorities after completing a theoretical course of 200 hours and a 400-hour practical training period over roughly one year, followed by receiving a professional license from the Ministry of Health.

The petitioner — the All Citizens Party — argues that the training period is extremely short and unprofessional, posing a risk to the public, and that the law fails to achieve its declared purpose of reducing workload. On the contrary, it may lead to the opposite result, endangering public health.

“It seems someone fell asleep at their post,” whether in the Knesset or in the Ministry of Health.

The All Citizens Party, through its Secretary General, Attorney Mohammad Yehia, has petitioned the High Court of Justice (Bagatz) against the law, demanding the freezing of its implementation until the establishment of a special committee to examine the program, in cooperation with the Council for Higher Education, the Medical Association, and the Pharmacists’ Association, with the aim of improving and developing the professional training track for this role.

Public health must not be harmed — the health of every citizen in the country.Every party involved in the matter must act responsibly.
