The Lesser Good !

By: Mohamad Yahia The state is approaching its eightieth year, yet the melting pot has not forged a unified Israeli identity. The process of refinement has not worked either. Three generations. Two peoples. One state—unequal and discriminatory treatment.

Between a partial democracy in retreat and the struggle against a regime coup, let the “lesser good” now realize its power.Arab society—more than two million native-born citizens—and their partners within Jewish society are the ones who will contribute their share to safeguarding the state’s incomplete democracy and save the ship from sinking until it reaches safe harbor.

The journey from “Jewish and democratic” to “a state of all its citizens” is arduous and frightening for many citizens, yet it is the right direction despite the reluctance or difficulty in agreeing and accepting it.

Awaken and illuminate the path for human beings—equal citizens. Let every person live according to their faith and freedom.

The “lesser good,” for the sake of change. A choice rather than a lack of choice. There is a path and there is a solution. Open your eyes; think outside the box.This will not be yet another decision forced upon us out of necessity—not the lesser evil—but a correct choice. The “lesser good” is what will save the state for all its citizens: the Arab and Jewish minorities who are partners in the struggle to preserve a democracy meant to guarantee the rights of all citizens.

Together we will raise the voice of partnership and begin to make an impact.Mutually responsible, all as one. Because it is worth more. Otherwise, we will all pay a heavy price. This is the call of the hour. Let us take action.
